From the Editors’ DeskThis issue coincides with the launch of ‘IUMRS Facets’, an international publication brought out by the International Union of Materials Research Societies to inform and promote the enabling role of advanced materials for global progress. This publication offers a new forum for promoting exchange of ideas and information and for inspiring the development of new research and policy matters. ‘Facets’ would provide a channel through which the important activities of MRSI can be brought to the attention of the international community of Materials Scientists. Prof. D Chakravorty, President, MRSI is on its Editorial Advisory Board and Dr. Y R Mahajan on the Board of corresponding Editors. More information on this publication can be had from www. iumrs.org The Thirteenth Annual General Meeting of MRSI is fast approaching and we do look forward to meeting a large number of our members on that occasion. Our best wishes to all the members for a happy, prosperous and fruitful year ahead.

Report on ACCMS-1 The MRSI Subject Group on Compuer Aided Design of Materials organized (jointly with JNCASR and IISc) the first Conference of the Asian Consortium for Computational Materials Science (ACCMS-1) in Bangalore during Nov 29 - Dec 1, 2001. Prof. S. Ranganathan acted as Chairman, while Dr. G.P. Das and Dr. U. Waghmare were the joint convenors. This international meeting was attended by researchers working in the field of computational materials science in various Asian countries (Bangladesh, China, India, Iran, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, etc). Some leading experts from Europe in the field of electronic structure also came to this Meeting. There were 28 invited speakers (including 16 from abroad) and about 50 contributed papers (including 7 oral contributions). These covered a wide spectrum of computational techniques and application areas in materials science. Aida-Kawazoe prizes were given for the best presentations. The Proceedings will be published as a Special Issue of the Bulletin of Materials Science. The detailed programme and abstracts of the invited talks and contributed papers have been put up in the ACCMS web-site http://www.jncasr.ac.in/accms/. An in-depth discussion meeting was also held during this conference to share the views expressed by the representatives of various countries regarding the future strategies and role of this newly formed Asian consortium, whose objectives, activities, and other organizational details are already available on the web-site http://www.cmsmail.imr.tohoku.ac.jp/~accms/. Several concrete suggestions have been made and these have been minuted and are to be circulated amongst all the members and participants. It has also been unanimously decided that ACCMS-2 will be held in Beijing, China in 2002. U Waghmare |
